Cria Watch & Birthing Assistance
We pamper your pacas with hands-on attention, just like our own. Baby watch starts a good month before the "due date".
When it comes to baby watch, Jack is our full time barn manager & usually "catches" the crias. If we happen to be away when a cria is due, we make arrangements for an experienced alpaca caretaker to be here in our absence. We continue to monitor the cria after the birth to make sure all is progressing normally or assist as needed. An "e-coli cocktail" is given within 6 hours after birth, but only after the cria has nursed. Since the first 72 hours after birth are critical, we continue to keep a close eye on all newborns. All crias are weighed daily for at least the first month.
We have attended OSU's neonatal seminar and experienced difficult births & dystocias with excellent results.
Our professional vet is very experienced with alpacas & very available; Dr. Rott has assisted after hours, even when not on call :-)) |
