Training Your Alpaca For Handling
Shows are more competitive today than they ever have been in the past. Frequently a somewhat superior alpaca will be passed over if it is difficult to manage. Judges expect the animal to stand for examination and lead without fighting control, leaning or cushing. To show your animal off to its best advantage, a lot of time has to be spent with them getting them used to what will occur at the national shows. Working as an exhibitor/judge team, we work with the animals to accent their best points and teach them to calmly accept the handling expected in the ring.
Before becoming an alpaca breeder, we raised and showed English Setters. We were very successful and have applied many of the same practices in training and showing to our alpacas, and have earned many ribbons in the ring as a result.

Training your alpaca(s) to lead, load, stand for examination, etc... can be done to whatever extent wanted by owner. Done correctly, these feats come rather easily to alpacas and take very little time. There may be a small charge to cover the cost of boarding for whatever training desired. | |
