Black Velvet is a very attentive, doting mother and has plenty of milk. She answers to her name and is halter trained. Black Velvet has been a pleasure to own as she is a very sociable, enjoyable alpaca. She has an affinity for apples and always stops to see if I have a treat for her!!!
Black Velvet has maintained her fineness for a black very well. Her genetics come out of the Acero Marka ranch in Bolivia which was known for it's fine alpacas.
10/4/2011 - Black Velvet delivered a healthy cria, "Sojourner Truth", with that gorgeous maroon-colored fiber which appears to have an enormous amount of character to it with very nice crimpy bundling of fiber. Her sire was a medium fawn known for the character of his fiber.
Black Velvet delivered a white male cria on 9/29/12. The sire, Ultima was biopsied at 6 years old with a secondary to primary of 11.7/1; standard deviation 3.6; density of 43.7. He has improved the fleece on every cria he has thrown. His sire is the legendary Peruvian Hemingway. Ultima puts very fine crias on the ground who tend to be very stylish.
When weaned Black Velvet's cria Bolt from the Blue (aka Bolt) would, at the minimum, make an excellent fiber male as he has very promising fiber with bundling and crimp. Since he carries excellent conformation along with being strong and robust, he could be considered for breeding in a herd looking for those qualities.
Bolt sells separately for $500 or can go for no cost at all with his dam, Black Velvet, and female maroon yearling, Sojourner, for $4,000.
