Several years ago, I read a marvelous book called "Voluntary Simplicity: Toward a Way of Life That is Outwardly Simple, Inwardly Rich" by Duane Elgin. When I moved back to my home state of New York after a decade+ of living in New Jersey and working in Manhattan, I decided to put Elgin's teachings to work in my life. I now live very simply, having sold, donated or gifted most of the doo-dads, furnishings & collectibles acquired over a lifetime of collecting and acquisition. In 2005, I built a cottage on a "road less traveled" for the safety of my many cats, but within 2 miles of Exit 17 on Route 86/17 (Southern Tier Expressway)
Alpacas are the perfect complement to this laid-back lifestyle. Without a big house, fancy barns or white-board fencing to support, I can price my alpacas to fit the budget of nearly any buyer. By practicing traditional low-tech farming technologies that incorporate proven, efficient, and cost-effective husbandry and maintenance practices, I am able to offer high quality alpacas for reasonable prices.
LadySong's philosophy is based on Holistic Management principles. I practice labor-intensive husbandry, working alongside my Seneca, Amish and "English" under- or unemployed farming neighbors (folks experienced in old-fashioned, sustainable farm technologies) on big projects. This keeps my resources circulating in my community, provides much-needed income for some struggling neighbors, and helps develop and support strong community relationships. It also means I'm not purchasing, maintaining or housing heavy, high-tech farm equipment, which translates to further savings that are passed along to my savvy clients.

The fiber aspect of my breeding program focuses on handle (a slick, cool, "greasy" sensation), although without sacrificing density, lock and fineness. My foundation stock all have correct conformation (as described by the suri breed standard developed by the Suri Network), easy maintenance, excellent health, and exceptional productivity, while I continue to work to develop elegance and stature as the hallmark of my herd and increase the percentage of Bolivian genetics we bring to the industry, since so much of the Bolivian suri gene pool has been diluted because of America's infatuation with the Peruvian lines.
My unlimited free rebreedings policy gives new breeders time to develop experience and establish a direction in their breeding program before they need to invest in a breeding male who will take their breeding program to the next level. And, of course, clients can always come back to take advantage of future males purchased or bred by LadySong!
Our breeding prices are reasonable, our males are mobile and we accept drive-bys at half price!

Having adopted "Voluntary Simplicity" nearly a decade ago, I've found serenity and joy in my low-tech alpaca farm operation. LadySong raises suri alpacas, and is home to Sebastapol geese, a horse, guineas, and golden (and other) cats. We welcome farm visits, e-mails and phone calls, whether to "talk alpaca" or to chat about voluntary simplicity as a lifestyle.
