Nestled amidst lush rolling pastures beneath Maryland’s Sugarloaf Mountain lies Sugarloaf Alpaca Company. We are committed to our alpacas and our clients by breeding show-quality huacaya and suri alpacas and providing personalized customer service. While we are focusing on elite black and mahogany colored animals our breeding selections are aimed at producing the highest quality fiber on conformationally correct alpacas regardless of color.
We began in 2003 with West Coast genetics from Mike Safely’s Northwest Alpacas including Hemmingway, Augusto, Titan, Bruxo, and Admiral, and then added Cadete, Kahuna, Aga Khan, Royal Fawn and El Nino among others. This year we purchased two Snowmass studs: Snowmass Legacy Charmer and Snowmass Taboo. Both of these studs are out of legendary genetics and possess all of the usual Snowmass traits such as density, fineness, coverage and conformation in abundance. As you would expect from such highly sought-after genetics both herdsires have numerous awards that represent the objective industry evaluation of their entire package.
We operate on an alpaca-first basis when setting our farm priorities and practices and continually strive to provide a healthful and low stress environment. From premier hay (developed under the recommendations of Dr. Norm Evans) and a select pasture grass mix to quality water and the layout of our barn, fencing and paddocks, we work hard to create the ideal environment.
Breeding and raising alpacas can be an intimidating undertaking if you’re not prepared. When you purchase a dam or herdsire breeding from us we will provide you the support you need to be successful. If you are new to alpaca breeding our hands-on mentoring program gives you the option to agist your animals with us and work by our side so that you can learn proper alpaca procedures and practices. Whether you are an experienced breeder or someone entirely new to alpacas we look forward to sharing our passion! |

As we enter our fifth year in the alpaca industry we are expanding both our scope of services and onsite herd health management by taking advantage of Nancy’s animal science background. We have undertaken this expansion to ensure that our breeding program continues to rapidly move us towards the production of alpacas with consistently fine fleece in healthy, conformationally correct animals.
This past summer we expanded our operation with the acquisition of two award-winning herdsires from Snowmass Alpaca’s breeding program. Snowmass Legacy’s Charmer and Snowmass Taboo (A Nova son) and their legendary genetics have joined our herdsire row. These genetics will exponentially build on the superior genetics our animals already possess. One of the wisest things we learned when we first got into the alpaca industry was to breed to the best. We’re doing that with our dams and now we can offer those genetics to breeders up and down the East Coast through agisted, mobile and drive-by breeding services. Join us as we both take our breeding programs to the next level of success.
Our commitment to alpacas and to the success for both ourselves and our clients is second only to the health and welfare of our animals. While we have long administered our own shots, worming paste, etc., we now can ensure an even higher level of medical and health care through the use of our new vet room. Earlier this year we acquired our own ultrasound machine and are conducting initial and periodic tests to confirm that pregnancy is being maintained. In addition, we are able to to do fecal parasite analysis to aide in herd health and our management. This way we do not have to wait for the state lab to be open or to return results many hours after a symptom is observed. As with most medical issues the sooner a problem can be identified the more likely it is that the issue can be successfully resolved.
