About Suri Land Alpaca Ranch

Image is being processed by ANWelcome to Suri Land Alpaca Ranch located in Newton, Iowa. We are approximately thirty miles east of Des Moines, Iowa and two miles from Interstate 80, exit #168. We are home to about 60 Suri Alpacas - 26 are black, and 90% of the non-black alpacas have black in their lineage. That makes us the largest Black Suri Herd in Iowa and the Midwest. We also breed a few Huacayas.

Bob runs the ranch, assisted by our fourteen-year-old daughter Jessica, and wife Vicki. All our alpacas get daily hands on attention. Our five-year-old daughter, Maddie, adopted from China in October 2006 also assists in feeding and scooping poop. We also have 3 ag student from the local high school that work part time on the ranch.

We have many colorful suri's; however, our primary focus is breeding for dark and preferably black suri’s. In order to achieve our goal, we started out by selecting all maiden females with the desirable traits we found most most likely to produce Black. We also selected maidens so we could have direct impact on the selection of who the servicing herdsire would be. This method took us longer to get our first cria, but we felt it was the right thing to do. Our first four cria were all solid True Black. We currently run about 75% success rate on Black crias being born from our black herdsires.

All of our black alpacas come from well-known and well-respected Black and Gray bloodlines: Midas Touch, Fruzane Noir, Diablo, Inspiration of Bolivia, Sudden Impact, WRSR Doc Riley, Kobe of PVA, and Parinacota Oscar. Oscar was the first Gray alpaca imported to the United States. We also have alpacas from great Accoyo lines such as Accoyo Jackpot and Accoyo Bruxo.

For a small ranch, we have had great success at halter shows by winning more than our fair share of ribbons including a color and a reserve color championships. One of our farm bred True Black males was selected first by Dr Julio Sumar in September 2006 in a class of eleven Black yearling males

Breeder Biography

When we 1st looked at raising alpacas we fell in love with the beautiful black suri's that we saw and decided that they were what we wanted to breed for. We chose carefully and started with maidens so we could select the herd-sires we felt would help us achieve that goal. Our 1st 4 crias were solid true black, and our primary herd-sires have produced 70% black cria's. Our alpaca's have won many ribbons including color and reserve color championships
