About Summerlin Alpaca Farm

Image is being processed by ANIt all started while living in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was in that extreme enviroment that I saw my first alpaca on the Today Show, and life hasn't been the same since! We purchased our first two females from Crystal Mesa Alpaca Farm in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In January of 1994 we brought our little herd to their new home in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were the first alpacas to be brought into Vegas. We also helped educate the public through fairs, class room visits and the newspaper. Even with the high temperatures, our alpacas still did quite well in the big city. We learned a lot about alpaca ownership in those early years.

In 1995 we moved our family of nine and our growing herd of alpacas to Caldwell, Idaho. We are situated 25 miles west of Boise, Idaho. We bought raw acreage on a lovely hillside in the country. There we built our home, added fencing, erected a barn, laid underground sprinklers and built our alpaca herd to where we are today. The alpacas have flourished here in Idaho in the mild climate. Through the years we have not only prospered financially but our circle of friends has expanded also and we have been greatly blessed because of them.

Phil&Diane Hawkes

Grand Slam's 1st

Diane grew up on a large cattle ranch 30 miles south of Ten Sleep Wyoming. She was one of four daughters to George and Bobbie Wood, all through their growing up years, the girls were the main 'cowhands' on the ranch. Those many years of experience with livestock, have been a huge benefit to our alpaca business, but is certainly not required.

Our goal is to raise exceptional alpacas, in disposition, conformation and fiber. Because of our love for the many different colors of alpacas, we have an assortment of colors in our pastures. We raise predominately suris, but do keep a few huacayas also. Our alpacas come from some of the best bloodlines in the country; Accoyo Bruxo, Accoyo Caligula, Accoyo Victor, Accoyo Ganador, DDF MacGyver, Sierra Bonita's Sargent Pepper, Sierra Bonita's Sirrus Black, Highlander of Bolivia, Cantano of Peru, LCA Chief Qualchan, Peruvian Maverick, Captain Morgan, Elvis of Graceland, Rocky Red, NGG Caezar, and DPA Babe Ruth, to name a few.

Raising alpacas has also given our children a chance to experience real farm life, with chores and responsibilities. It hasn't been all fun and games but our venture has definitely been worthwhile and profitable. Along with our many births we have also experienced death, it just happens when you have livestock.

Our many years of alpaca farming have certainly been an education for us and we feel we can be of an assistance to the novice in helping them to avoid costly mistakes that are often made by beginners.

We are not just about selling our alpacas, but offer our help in locating and evaluating potential alpacas for your purchase.

We welcome anyone to come and spend time with us to learn and experience the pleasure of alpaca ownership. If we had a chance to do it again, we would, in an instant!

Please call ahead for a welcomed farm visit.

Best Wishes,

Philip and Diane Hawkes
