Splendor in the Grass Suri Alpacas, LLC officially opened its barn doors on July 15, 2005 with the arrival of its first foundation female, Snowmass Summer! Summer is a beautiful light fawn proven dam out of the nationally known herdsire, Bruxo. We are thankful to Tom and LuAnn Lumsden of Chesapeake Alpacas for selling this wonderful female to us! The purpose of Splendor in the Grass Suri Alpacas is to provide exceptional quality breeding stock of pure Peruvian suris with Accoyo bloodlines. Our plan is to stay diverse while breeding to the best Peruvian males in the country whose genetic lines have proven to produce crias with excellent conformation and exquisite fleece characteristics.
The focus of our breeding program has been on those things that are the most critical to economic viability such as good health, early maturity and good reproductivity. With these traits well set throughout our herd, we focused next on improving conformation. With that trait now genetically stamped on our animals, our focus has been on fleece improvement with an emphasis on INDEPENDENT AND CONSISTENT LOCKING, LUSTER, DENSITY AND FINENESS. With every passing year, our herd's fleece has improved and we couldn't be more pleased. Our 2008 "clip" was sent to Autumn Mist Fiber Mill in New York for processing into yarn and the owner, Leslie Jorritsma, stated, "...you can't even tell the difference between your prime and your seconds which tells us that you have really super animals!". We also offer a variety of alpaca end-products such as sofa throws, yarn, teddy bears, shawls, sweaters, and "chullos" (peruvian style hats) just to name a few items. Call us for pricing and purchasing details.
