About Tuckaway Farm Alpacas

Image is being processed by ANAs a child, Judy always dreamed of living on a farm. Discovering alpacas was the incentive to make the dream come true. At Tuckaway Farm, we raise registered Peruvian Huacayas. Our mission, working in harmony with nature, is to breed unique, amiable, alpacas with remarkable fleece. We set high goals and work consistently to improve both our foundation herd and the alpacas we offer for sale. ...

Our first encounter with alpacas was a lark just to satisfy our curiosity. But we were captivated. We couldn't stop talking about these intriguing animals and had to learn more. We ordered back issues of Alpacas Magazine, purchased books, and spent enlightening hours on the Internet. We also began a round of farm visits, searching for two perfect ladies to start our herd.

The search ended on a farm in the hills of North Georgia. As Judy stood at the fence, Kiss leaned over and “kissed” her and there was no turning back. Our spirits sailed. We returned home eager to create our farm. Learning the difference between orgling and pronking was just the beginning. There were decisions to make about goals and objectives, financing, animal care, and farm layout. We wrote a business plan, put up fences and reworked an old horse barn. We also spent endless time explaining to friends and relatives that "no, they are not birds."

As we progressed, we purchased more alpacas to add to our herd. We welcomed them home in the fall, along with our first two crias who fascinated us with their antics and soulful eyes. We were now official alpaca farmers!

Our journey would have been slow and difficult were it not for the guidance and support we received from others. Recognizing this, we are committed to giving individual attention with all aspects of setting up a farm, from providing guidelines for a business plan, through fencing and shelter design, stock selection, daily care and farm promotion. We want our clients to be successful!

The Future

Sassy & Sadie

Butt, butt, butt .

When we decided to raise alpacas, we also made a commitment to the entire industry and its future. We are excited to be part of the alpaca community and participate actively in alpaca affiliations on a national, regional and now a state level as founding members of the Georgia Alpaca Association (GAA). We are also members of the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA), the Southeastern Alpaca Association (SeAA), the Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI) and the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA). The educational opportunities these groups provide, and the new friends we have made through them, enrich us and help us continually increase our knowledge base and hone our skills.

Sharing our lives with alpacas has changed us forever. In addition to the time we now spend on chores, training and feeding, there is also a calming joy just in being around the alpacas as they react to our presence. They started as “our herd,” then quickly became unique individuals. Some are eternally curious, eager and quick to respond. Others are laid back, unexcitable. Some are playful, some regal and dignified, and some, like shy children, always averting their glance, so not to be noticed. They all uplift us. “When I look into their eyes,” Jim says, “I feel connected. They renew my belief that life is good and God wants us to be happy.”

Tuckaway Farm is located in Madison, Georgia, along the Antebellum Trail, 60 miles east of Atlanta. Set in the rolling hills of Morgan County, a region of dairy farms, cotton fields, and pecan orchards, Madison was recently rated “The Number One Small Town in America” by Travel Holiday Magazine and is fondly known by locals as “the town Sherman refused to burn.” Old homes line the streets around fully restored shops, museums, and unique restaurants. Come tour the town, stay in one of Madison's many bed-and-breakfast inns or hotels, and stop by Tuckaway Farm to visit with our alpacas. It could change your life forever!
