We have expanded our alpaca dream by developing products through our fiber business, Vanity Apparel. Please visit our apparel site at www.vanityfine.com.
We continue to develop our herd as always with an emphasis on fineness, SD, CV and staple as these qualities produce the best wearable products.
Genetics, science, and genetics (can't say enough about this). These are the building blocks we are using to guide our herd development and breeding program.
GENETICS: All heritages will be used with an emphasis on PERUVIANs, ACCOYOs, top 5% STUDS, and animals with at least one 'beyond' fleece characteristic such as a very low AFD, low SD, low CofV, high SP ratio, or long staple length.
SCIENCE: Dr. Evans nutrition program, water conditioning, grass analysis, fiber measurement, and skin biopsies.

The goal of our breeding program is to incrementally advance fleece characteristics (within our herd) such as fineness, staple length, and handle with numerical goals in mind. If the average length after a years growth is 100mm then we are shooting for 125mm. If the average SP ratio is 7/1 then we are shooting for 9/1 and if the average fiber diameter is 24 microns after 2 years, then we are shooting for 21 microns after 2 years.
This program depends on the best genetics for both male and female alpacas and careful selection of studs for particular females.
Our current goals for a 2 year old alpaca:
Length: >=100mm Density: >=54fpm SP Ratio: >=10/1 2year AFD: <=20um CV: <=21% SD: <=4.0% CF: >=96.0
'Beyond' Fleece at 2 years of age: Length: >=125mm+ Density: >=60fpm+ SP Ratio: >=12/1 2year AFD: <=19um CV: <=18% SD: <=3.5% CF: >=98.5
Although elite fiber qualities will drive our future breeding decisions, we started our herd with conformationally correct, colored alpacas and expect to maintain these qualities as well.
Thank you for taking the time to visit our site.
Warm Regards, Beth & John
