AlpacaNation:  What advice would you give to those just getting started in the industry?

Falkor Ranch Alpacas:  Get your first alpacas from someone who is willing to be your mentor. You will have questions that you won't think to ask until you are caring for your own alpacas. Attend seminars on health, nutrition and birthing. This is a big investment and you need to know how to keep your investments in good health, how to know when something isn't right, and what to do about it. This is also where that mentor comes in.

AlpacaNation:  What unique challenges do you face as a small, mid-size, or larger breeder?

Falkor Ranch Alpacas:  The advantage of being a small breeder, is that we can work with each alpaca everyday, so they are all very friendly. That makes them more marketable. Alpacas are a great investment with a lot of tax advantages, but people choose this particular type of investment because they want to work with sweet, friendly animals. The challenge is that when you are small, you don't have the advertising dollars that the larger breeders have. You have to work harder to get known. Still, if you are honest and ethical with your clients and you are available to support and help them, your business will grow because of their referrals and repeat business.

AlpacaNation:  Tell us about yourself...

Falkor Ranch Alpacas:  I am an oncology nurse and my husband is a paramedic supervisor. While we both have enjoyed our careers and the people we have worked with, it is time for a change of pace. With our three children grown up and going their own ways, it became clear that it was time to do something together that we really enjoy. Raising alpacas has been everything we hoped for.

AlpacaNation:  What sets your farm and herd apart from others in the industry?

Falkor Ranch Alpacas:  We work harder for our clients providing information, support, hands on experience and help - before and after a sale. We have a herd of high quality animals of all colors and each one is halter trained, friendly and easy to handle.
