AlpacaNation: How long have you been in the alpaca business?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: I bought my first alpaca in 1999.
AlpacaNation: How did you become interested in alpacas?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: A friend at work said she was interested in them. I said "Alpacas??? What's an alpaca?" Soon after this discussion, I saw an ad in my local paper regarding an open house, which we both attended. Then a few weeks later, there was a show at my local fairgrounds, which we both attended too. I was hooked. I fell in love with a particular alpaca at that show, and started some serious research. I didn't end up buying the one I fell in love with, but I bought one 2 months later.
AlpacaNation: What steps did you take to prepare for raising an alpaca herd?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: I boarded my animals for 5 years. It took me that long to find property and get the farm set up. I gained a lot of knowledge and experience during that time that gave me a comfort level in actually taking care of them full time.
AlpacaNation: Describe your first alpaca purchase... would you do anything differently today?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: My first purchase was one I stumbled upon while researching a different one. I wouldn't change a thing. I've been completly satisfied with her. Her first cria is my multi-champion herdsire Alcatraz.
AlpacaNation: Do you have a favorite Alpaca? Why is it your favorite?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: I do. But I can't tell you about them because the others will get jealous.
AlpacaNation: Any embarrassing moments you would like to share?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: I was leading a group of animals to my stall at a show. One of them decided to drop and roll, knocking me off balance. I straddled her to keep from falling on her, and she decided to stand up at that moment. I ended up on top of her and she took me for a ride. Fortunately, no one got hurt, but it was embarrasing.
AlpacaNation: What is your greatest achievement or favorite memory since you started raising alpacas?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: My greatest achievement was the breeding decision that produced my champion herdsire, Alcatraz. He did all the work earning the ribbons, but I'm extremely proud of him!
AlpacaNation: How did you decide on your farm name? Is there a special meaning behind the name?
Spittin' Image Alpacas: I was just brainstorming, tossing around any possible names that came to mind. I'm not even sure who's idea it was, but as soon as I heard it, I knew it was the right one.
