AlpacaNation:  How did you decide on your farm name? Is there a special meaning behind the name?

Mada Vemi Alpacas:   We are very family oriented around here so we needed a "family" name. We came up with the name Mada Vemi by using the first two letters of each of our names. MArk, DAwn, VEronica, and MIchelle.

AlpacaNation:  What advice would you give to those just getting started in the industry?

Mada Vemi Alpacas:  LEAVE THE CHECKBOOK AT HOME! Seriously! One look at these faces and you'll be digging for the checkbook. As hard as it is to wait to make your first purchase, you'll be glad you did.

Visit as many farms as you can, research on the internet, ask lots of questions, get some hands on experience, then find your checkbook. If you need help coming up with a list of questions let me know and I'll help you. It's hard to know what to ask when you're first starting out.

If you're looking for that hand's on experience come see us. I'm always looking for volunteers on herd health days!

AlpacaNation:  Any embarrassing moments you would like to share?

Mada Vemi Alpacas:  Plenty of them! Give me a call and I'll be happy to fill you in on all the details. :) Make sure to remind me to tell you the one about the trailer!

AlpacaNation:  What is your greatest achievement or favorite memory since you started raising alpacas?

Mada Vemi Alpacas:  My favorite memory so far is of taking the alpacas to a craft show in Meadows of Dan, VA. There were lots of people roaming around and I walked Kumar up to the Poor Farmers Market (souvenier shop and food store) to meet some of the visitors. There was an elderly man on the porch eating a double scoop icecream cone that Kumar took an interest in. Kumar wanted that icecream cone so badly that he followed the man back into the store after it. You should have seen the faces of everyone inside! When we came back next month for another craft show they asked me to bring Kumar back to the store because he was such a hit last time!
