AlpacaNation: How did you decide on your farm name? Is there a special meaning behind the name?
Alpaca Spirit Ranch: The "spirit" of the people of our country and state, as well as the people of the alpaca industry just went together, so the name seemed a natural. The colors of red, white, and blue fit right in to go with both our United States and Texas flags.
AlpacaNation: What advice would you give to those just getting started in the industry?
Alpaca Spirit Ranch: Research, research and more research. Read everything you can find on the internet and links on farm pages, visit farms near you and while you are on vacation, consider what area of the industry you want to focus on--breeding, fiber, or both. Log into one or more university websites that specialize in ongoing alpaca research and read recommendations and their discoveries. Go to alpaca shows during the year to meet and greet, and watching a good show judge who explains what they are evaluating as they judge is invaluable as you learn to understand the qualities to consider in buying your alpacas. Find a good CPA with livestock background and preferably alpaca clients. Take your time to become familiar with the industry and establish a good business plan, and you will have the right foundation to start a successful business.
