AlpacaNation: What advice would you give to those just getting started in the industry?
Rocky Ridge Farm: Just as you will hear from many others....visit as many farms as you can. Keep an open mind and remember that if you ask five people a question you will get five different answers. You must educate yourself enough to make the decision that works best for you
AlpacaNation: How did you decide on your farm name? Is there a special meaning behind the name?
Rocky Ridge Farm: When it came time to name my daughters goat herd we had it narrowed down to a few options but couldn't decide. I needed to get the registration papers sent in so she could show at the local fair. She happened to be outside picking up rocks in the pasture when I yelled out the window to her. At that point all she could think about was all those rocks in the pasture and so we became Rocky Ridge Farm. I thought about changing it to give the alpacas a more regal name but I just couldn't do it. I guess I'm just a sentimental mom.
AlpacaNation: What steps did you take to prepare for raising an alpaca herd?
Rocky Ridge Farm: We've had a variety of animals for many years so we already had the barn and fence up. We were able to make a few modifications and updates and we were ready to go. We visited several farms with open houses and some by appointment. After we brought our animals home we made some more fence and barn adjustments.
