Posted - 03/14/2012 : 7:54:00 PM Wow. I can only imagine how they feel. Losing any animal that is close to your heart is not easy. Glad to hear how many have chipped in for the 4-h group. |

Posted - 03/13/2012 : 10:44:52 PM I can't imagine the heartbreak and, yet these people are able to look past their pain and to worry more about the many kids whose hearts are broke.
As someone else has mentioned, the tragedies just seem to go on and on. Yet, everytime, it is the Alpaca Community that steps up to the plate to help.
I just want to say that The Alpaca Community is the Best bunch of people that I've ever known!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God Bless Each And Every One Of You!!!

Posted - 03/12/2012 : 12:56:07 AM Well, Judith, as usual you were right! I don't know how in the world you find the time to always have your finger so much on the pulse!
I talked to Susie Melton, the farm owner's wife whom you can see in the video clip, this afternoon. She asked me to express their appreciation to all and confirmed that they did, in fact, receive 15 animals from another farm in Indiana. Friends are boarding the animals for them until they can get their facilities rebuilt and ready for the new herd, so happily the 4H program will continue.
Alpaca folks have shown again that we tend to be a pretty great bunch of kind and caring people as a whole. Susie didn't seem to be aware of us on the Forum and AN in general, but she certainly is now! I won't be surprised if we start to hear from them once in a while.

Posted - 03/11/2012 : 11:01:32 AM I believe I read on FaceBook that someone has offered him 12-14 males so he may or may not still need/want any. Or perhaps that one was a tornado loss. There've been so many losses lately.

Posted - 03/11/2012 : 09:56:06 AM Yes Beth, I have 1 young fiber boy who is healthy and strong and needs a good 4-H home. If they are interested he is black with a white blaze down his forehead. His name is Harry Potter. Let me know if they are interested. I saw the story and thought it was horrible too, what a nightmare...

Posted - 03/11/2012 : 12:45:44 AM Well, I never heard anything back from the reporter. I read some more on this story and at one point the farm owner is quoted as saying how much he wants to rebuild the 4H program, which gave me impetus to do a little digging. I think I've found his address and phone so will try to call him tomorrow. Anyone else interested in donating an animal if this man is, in fact, wanting to start his program again? I'm just praying he is good about how he cares for his animals.......

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 11:49:25 AM I sent an email last night asking the journalist who did the story to pass on my contact info to these folks....if I get a reply and they're interested, I will of course post it.
We have a boy whose registration is being withheld unless I can pay $5k for it and we've had him for years. There is no way I'll ever resolve the registration issue and breed him even though I still think his lineage and fleece absolutely warrants it. But until now, I've never been able to think of letting him go because he has such a cute, "little boy" way about him even at (OMG-I just looked it up!) 9 years old. Perfect for kids and 4H and with his personality I think he will be a comfort to those kids.
We'll see what happens......

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 06:30:15 AM How devastating. I'm sure with all the farms out there that have excess fiber boys those animals can be replaced with donations. It is such a worthy cause. Does anyone know how to contact these people?
