Posted - 04/29/2012 : 11:36:28 AM I have a bred female who seems to be spending a lot of time over the poop pile for the past couple of days. She is passing beans, but I've only seen a few drops of urine so I'm suspecting a possible UTI or blockage. I know people have had success unblocking urinary crystals with Ace, but wonder whether that would be safe for a pregnant female and the cria. I'll try to get a urine sample tomorrow to take to the vet's to see if she can find out what's going on and clarify whether it's an infection or a blockage. The female does not seem to be in pain but I'll be watching her to see if she finally succeeds to pass a stream. Meantime, I thought I'd gather some information about others' experiences with females having urinary problems (I sure know about males with them!).

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 3:05:47 PM FURTHER UPDATE: Cria is at the vet's now. She crashed early this afternoon. She's been lethargic since delivery, and hasn't nursed yet. I did get several ounces of Colostryx down her around noon, but she still went downhill after that. Keeping my fingers crossed. Last year, her half brother was my dystocia/malpositioned cria who was delivered (rescued?) by my vet, Mary. I named him Mary's Magic. This year, if this gal makes it, she'll have to be named Mary's Miracle.

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 10:26:11 AM Can you "retire" from alpacas? I think we will end up eventually just having a few and not breeding. Wish they'd come up with a way to keep my girls from wanting to be bred all the time...

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 07:56:44 AM Hi Kate -- yes, I did sleep like a log! Things seem SO much brighter this morning. Oh, right. The sun is out today - what a change!
Much as I liked NC when I visited, some changes in my business plan mean that I can't make a move at this point. I guess I'll have to wait until I retire from alpacas, and then maybe I'll move down nearer my brother and his family. Or maybe I'll just move in with my daughter and annoy her for few years LOL!

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 07:19:15 AM I checked her when I got up around 6 this morning, and they're both cushed and alert. I haven't seen the cria nurse yet, and Indy is still dragging a bit of placenta (the rest was dragging around when I got home last night, but she knocked most of it off against a fence panel). I'll get the vet out later to flush her to make sure there's no problem with the placenta, and if I don't see the cria nursing shortly, I'll go pick up some colostrum from my neighbor and bottle feed to get her started. Indy's milk may not have come in yet, since the placenta is still clinging. I tell you, when that cria hit the ground, I feel like the student pilot who successfully landed a damaged aircraft! At least she's safely "on the ground" and I can deal with the rest of the issues that may occur now.

Posted - 05/10/2012 : 7:11:39 PM Update: Indy finally delivered, late this afternoon, a nice brown female cria. She had been in labor on and off for over 2 days, and I have been beside myself with concern (even checking on her in the middle of the night last night!). The prolapse would appear and disappear and then return, so I kept re-reading all the other threads on the Forum saying that they typically deliver without problems even with a prolapse. Thank you, all you experienced folks who wrote those responses! I think you saved my sanity this year!
Around 3 this afternoon, after watching Indy leave the herd and cush by herself near the house, I decided to bring them all up to the barn and barnyard so I could keep closer eye on her. Around 3:30, I went to check for the hundred and forty-fourth time today, and watch as the water broke, a dark nose appeared and she began to move that cria on out. Her contractions this year were almost negligible, so I was very anxious until the whole front half of the cria was out. The rest always follows quickly and this was no exception. The cria itself seemed very lethargic - no fish-mouthing or thrashing during the birth as they usually do (maybe because of the long drawn-out birthing experience). I moved her and Indy into the barn and out of the cold wind, and dried and coated her. She was beginning to make hungry noises and was trying to stand by the time I had to leave for work, so I'm hoping that by the time I get back at 9 tonight, she'll be up and nursing and the placenta will have passed and all will be well with the world. When I see that, I'm sure a big weight will drop from my shoulders and I will be able to sleep tonight!

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 7:43:26 PM Where's the "like" button, Debbie? Have a great time at the show. I'm just glad that Dar is not going to that show this weekend so she can "paca sit" for Indy. My daughter is definitely not up to a potential birthing issue.

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 5:14:33 PM Thanks Carolyn. Just came back from the vet (again), and we decided not to go ahead with the induction. The cria has now moved back and Indy's no longer in labor, and is prolapsing only slightly from time to time. The prolapsed tissue pushes back inside quite easily, so I was advised just to watch and push it back when necessary. Mary thinks she will likely deliver naturally but isn't ready now. Neither she nor I am comfortable with inducing unless it's absolutely necessary, especially since this particular female had an exceptionally strong reaction to estrumate 3 years ago when I had to abort an unwanted pregnancy from a male group break-in (after which I reconfigured the barn so the boys' door no longer opens directly into the female pen!). I have also made a Plan B in case she doesn't deliver before Friday: a friend who is another local breeder is willing to pick her up and keep her over the weekend so someone knowledgeable and experienced will be able to monitor for problems and call the vet if needed. That takes a big load off my mind! Still keeping my fingers crossed that she delivers before I leave, but at least I know I'm covered if she doesn't.

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 4:21:47 PM Hi Judith, If you're planning on inducing anyhow, I'd go ahead and give the estrumate. If she's already in labor, it won't do a thing....if not, you'll get the ball rolling.
I'd be leary of the oxytocin as it may make her push too hard and prolapse the uterus.
Not a vet, but oxytocin makes me nervous.

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 1:44:41 PM Yes, in this case it was/is a vaginal prolapse. I thought at first it was a uterine prolapse, but was "educated" on this forum (thanks, everybody, for all that info last year LOL). My gal seems to have stopped labor again. I have oxytocin but don't want to use it unless it's absolutely necessary. I'm hoping she'll deliver naturally so I don't have to have her induced, but I certainly don't want her trying to deliver on her own while I'm away this weekend. Trying to time the induction is just as difficult as waiting it out, with all there is left to do before the weekend plus my work schedule.

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 12:55:13 PM Hey Judith,
Are you talking vaginal prolapse? I had a girl do the same thing two years in a row - the second year ended in a uterine prolapse. I haven't rebred her again, but was told that usually if they have a uterine prolapse they won't do it again. Not sure if there is any genetic component to it either. Still not sure what I am going to do with this girl. She is a great producer but I need to make sure I have the funds if she does have a uterine prolapse again so maybe next year...

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 11:46:30 AM Thanks Debbie - I think she's in labor now. Just came in to get my delivery supplies. She appears to be actively pushing this time, so maybe (keep your fingers crossed) this is it.

Posted - 05/02/2012 : 10:07:18 AM Still no cria, and since I have to be away this weekend for AFCNA, I'm planning to have her induced later today to make sure she delivers while somebody is here who can ensure things go well. She just led me on a dance through the barn though so she's still feeling sassy and "unencumbered." I'm not seeing her hovering over the pile so often lately though, so I wonder whether the cria has moved back away from the "launch pad." I swear, I'm gonna call this one Revolution.
