I have a gorgeous Accoyo female that I have not been successful in having a live birth. Apparently she did have two cria at the previous farm ( I got her in a trade). I bred her twice and both times she delivered at 9-10 months a stillborn cria. No obvious abnormality in the cria.
I was not planning on rebreeding her. However, my male escaped and bred her along with a few other open girls when I was at work. She is spitting off big time. Is there something I can give her to help her maintain her pregnancy or would it be best to estrumate her. She is at 20 days.
Thank you.

I don't think it's too late to run the mineral panel and increase her selenium if that's the problem. Progesterone won't help if selenium is the issue, so you want to be able to rule it in or out before worrying about hormone supplements.

Thanks..she was bred three weeks ago by an escapee and she is spitting off like a fire hydrant. I am just wondering if there is something I can do to help her? or estrumate her now so we don't go thru the heartache of losing her cria at 10 months. From her births, it appears the placenta does not stay attached. It comes out with the cria. I would NOT have rebred her without a workup first, but I am too late for that.
Thanks

I would do a mineral panel on your girl, Tana, before doing anything else - low selenium levels can cause what you're seeing.

Tana,
I know a girl who birthed very early on fall births, about the same time as yours. Changing to an early spring breeding schedule eliminated carrying a late term pregnancy through the summer heat, and resolved the issue. She has birthed 5 crias without problems.
We used Hyproval here, without success, on a girl losing pregnancies at about 3 months along.
Good luck with this girl,

dont have any good alpaca vets here, but I work for a small animal vet that will order the progesterone for me. Could someone help me with brand? what to order? amount to give? I have had her checked for infections after she lost her cria. She came back clean. It seems the placenta did not stay attached.Thanks. It is worth a try,
Tana

Hi Tana,

I would talk to your vet as progesterone is given to a female that can't hold a pregnancy during the beginning. I had a girl that would spit and absorb the pregnancy at 21 days if she did not get progesterone. I would give her progesterone after her first spit and she would hold it to the end. Her shots were weekly and her last shot was at day 280. I would think you could give her progesterone starting later in her pregnancy to hold her level, but if she is aborting late term, there may be another issue and progesterone may not help. Maybe an infection?

I got it from a vet in Ohio, but you just need to get a prescription. It is given ST by injection.
She will run as soon as she sees you coming after awhile. She will learn every trick you try to get her in a catch pen. You dread it as much as she does.
I think after 9 months of shots every two weeks I would run too.
But it is very effective in holding a pregnancy to term.

Did you get the progesterone from Your vet? Any specific one? And how do you dose it?
Thanks

We did the same as Melissa but started 1 week after pregnancy, or as soon as she spat.(Is that a word even? lol)and gave the shot every 2 weeks. We also stopped 60 days before. This treatment was prescribed by a very well know alpaca vet. Worked great.

We had a girl that we could not keep pregnant for two years in a row after multiple attempts and positive spit tests. She was at another farm getting bred and where the vet could monitor her more closely but I believe the first dose of progesterone was given at about 30 days. We then gave it every 28 days until 60 days before her due date. So far so good! I haven't seen cria movement yet but she has gotten visibly larger and was still pregnant last time we did an ultrasound. I would call your vet soon and you should still have time to start the progesterone. Good luck!

Tana, you might want to ask your vet about progesterone treatments - I have no experience with them, but some people have used them to help females hold a pregnancy, although I seem to recall that the supplementation was necessary early in the pregnancy, not late - but I could easily be misremembering.
