Does anyone use Cylence pour-on on their alpacas?? If so, is it safe for all..and does it work?? How much do you use? This weather has created the WORST flies we have ever had... thanks

I didn't think Cylence did anything when I tried it, but Endure definitely does seem to work. I am using Equisect on the boys this year and Repel-X on the girls, and they do make a difference. I hate using chemical sprays, but this year has been ridiculous!

Yes - the Repel-X has fewer active ingredients, and is "safer" - I thought it better to go as minimal as possible on the girls what with the cria, etc. The boys get somewhat better fly control, but at the cost of additional chemicals. Vet agreed that I should use as little as possible on the girls - but they have much better fans than the boys, so they're coping

I have always used the Bronco fly repellent as it is water based and not oil based...What I have found to be very effective is diluting it approx 50/50 with the cheapest brand of mouth wash you can find (i.e. listerine) ...An old farmer told me about this and it works great...I don't know how it works but the alpacas do not mind the spray as I normally use the mint scented...

Last year, I tried all sorts of home remedy mixtures (vinegar, Skin So Soft etc). This year I'm back to using the Cylence. While we've had the wettest Spring ever recorded, we've not had too much of a fly problem yet.
thanks

GET SOME BARN SWALLOWS! I can't believe the fly relief! At first I was concerned about a fire, but I can't see where there is anything to really ignite, especially since I use the "green" bulbs. I don't think they get as hot. Oh, why am I talking about lights? For some reason, they nest on top of the light fixtures. I didn't buy any fly predators this year and we're doing better than when the predators are at work. The swallow's diet is 70% big, fat flies!

@Mike C - the reason it's working so well may be the mint. Mint seems to be a natural fly deterrent. I've tried using various sprays (Endure, Bronco, Skin-So-Soft, etc.) on my alps and they absolutely hate to be sprayed, even on the legs. Nothing clears my barn faster than when they see me coming with the spray bottle. I swear, they're better about shots! Hence all the ducks and chickens roaming my barnyards, and I also love the swallows (at least when they're not swooping me when I'm trying to scoop). Personally, we have so many gnats hanging around this year from the tall grass that I've taken to bathing in Jean Nate before going outdoors. I can't wait until my neighbors do the first mowing!

Judith...I suspect you are right on with that...I even took it a step futher and pureed some fresh mint I grow and added it to the mix....The alpacas seem to enjoy the scent and I have very few issues with flies at all....

This may sound silly, but after reading the suggestions, do you think just spraying a diluted mint mouthwash on the pacas would work against the flies? Mine also flee if they even suspect I have the spray bottle, any ideas for that? Thanks-

We use Tempo SC Ultra to spray surfaces. We spray it on barn floors and walls we also spray it on bean piles. It is a very safe product, resturaunts use it in their kitchens. It keeps flies awy for up to 30 days. A little goes a long way.

Katy, is it toxic? I'd like to try it on surfaces, but wouldn't want my poultry to get into it and get sick or die.

Not sure if this is the one Katy is referring to but if you google "tempo sc ultra" you'll find alot of links. It is recommend not to ingest it, get it into the water supply, toxic to aquatics, and it is recommended to not get it onto your skin.

This is from the label...Tempo SC has been EPA-registered and is labeled for use in virtually any area including livestock buildings, horse stables, swine houses, poulty houses and is safe enough to use in around the home, schools, on lawns, trees, and etc. It is a no odor, non-staining, long lasting, safe insecticide that targets a huge variety of pests and so you know that you can trust the effectiveness of Tempo SC Ultra.

Thanks for that info Katy, I may give this a try. Our flys are not too bad yet but the pesky little nats are diving the poor 'pacas nuts & me too.

We sell it where I work which is at an agronomy center. I have seen it on line for alot cheaper. Make sure you get the liquid and not the powder. It is much easier to get mixed. We put it in a 2 gallon hand sprayer.

| This information is so helpful as I have a friend who has alpacas. I have done some work for her taking care of them and yes flies are terrible. I am going to let her know about all the different remedies that all of you have tried and see if some of them work for her. Although I don't think she likes using chemicals so we wil probably go for the natural stuff. Thanks. |
