HAD A DYSTOCIA BIRTH PROBLEM, ENDED UP HAVING TO DO A CEASERAIN IN THE PASTURE, MOM MADE IT A COUPLE DAYS BUT DIED. STRATED OFF BOTTLE FEEDING THE LITTLE GIRL, HAD ANOTHER CRIA A FEW DAYS LATER AND THEN ABOUT A WEEK LATER THE ORPHAN QUIT TAKING THE BOTTLE AND WAS NURSING ON THE OTHER NEW MOM. THE TWO OF THEM HAVE BEEN DOING THIS NOW ABOUT THREE WEEKS AND HOLDING THEIR OWN BUT ARE STARTING TO DROP IN WEIGHT SOME, DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THIS MOM HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF MILK BUT SHE IS A GOOD GIRL TO LET BOTH ON. HAVE HAD A COUPLE OTHER CRIA BUT THE ORPHAN SHOWS NO INTEREST IN GOING ANYWHERE ELSE. i AM CONCERNED ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT. HAVE TRIED TO BOTTLE FEED SOME BUT NEITHER HAS ANY INTEREST IN A BOTTLE. AM WONDERING IF THERE IS A SUPPLEMENT OR IF THERE MIGHT BE A TRICK TO GET THEM INTERESTED IN GRAIN. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THOUGHTS WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.

THANKS,
FRED REICH

So sorry you lost your girl... have you increased nutrition for the dam nursing the two cria? She is going to need extra to keep up the supply of milk for two growing cria.... very good hay..with some alfalfa if possible..as much as she wants..whenever she wants...plenty of fresh water, grain, maybe add some protein like soy meal..a little goes a long way. There are high calorie supplements like DYNE for added calories for cria... how much weight are they losing...or are they just not gaining as much as they were at first??

THANKS DEBBIE: YES HAVE INCREASED HER GRAIN AND SHE GOES AFTER IT WILDLY. THERE IS ALWAYS PLENTY OF GOOD HAY AND SHE AND BABIES ALL SEEM TO BE EATING IT. HEAT IS NO FUN AND AM SURE THAT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT ALL. WILL START ADDING ALPHALA PELLETS AND GOING TOMODRDER SOME DYNE - THAT SOUNDS GREAT. I AM A WORRY WATR BUT JUST DO NOT WANT ANY HARM TO COME TO ANY OF THEM, HAVE HAD ENOUGH DEATHS ET AL, KNOW THEY HAPPEN BUT SURE WANT TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO AVOID THEM - HATED TO LOOSE MOM, SHE AND THE SURGATE MOM WERE MY TWO ORIGINAL.

THANKS AGAIN

FRED

I acquired an orphaned cria and after a week she refused the bottle and took up with my other dam and her cria and both didn't grow to full size. This was a few yrs back when I was very new to this but this yr. I have preg. gals and bought some "All in One" and mixed alpaca pellets and senior horse grain with molasses into it well. Everyone has gained or retained great body scores and when the crias arrive and start eating I will load their creep up with the goodies too. I also free feed a very nice Orchard/Alf blend of hay. Right now I'm keeping fresh electrolytes in everyone's water buckets as the temps are hitting the 100's. Do you have a creep for the crias? So sorry to hear about such an emotional birthing, I hope your female cria is exceptional and will take some of the sad out of her birthing experience. I have a wonderful 19 yr old dam due any day (in this heat) and I'm hoping all goes well and for you and yours as well.

The creep is the way to go with some alfalfa chaff. Try sprinkling some milk powder supplement on the chaff and spray lightly with water to get extra calories into them.

Fred. Did you do IGG on this cria? Because the dam was so traumatized with the delivery/surgery, she may not have enough colostrum for her cria. If IGG is less than 500, she needs a transfusion, otherwise no surrogate mother will be able to make her thrive. This cria is getting close to the time when she will fail and will contract a sepsis if there was not an adequate immunity transfer from the dam.
And if IGG is normal, I would try to syringe more whole cows milk in her mouth, if she does not take the bottle. You need a 50 cc syringe, without a needle of course, for this and start by slowly pushing the milk so the baby will learn to swallow. The other way is to tube the cria, once it is learned, this method is easy and takes less time to do than syringe the milk, though is scary at the beginning with worries that you will drown the cria if the liquid goes down the wrong path. Later, probably after 3 months old, she may be able to digest things that are not milk. And she needs 10% of her body weight in milk a day, to grow. It seems a lot, but is number that is useful to keep in mind so you will not shortchange her nutrition.
Your veterinarian can help you with the instructions, or you can call a breeder. Over the phone you can get a lot more information, and faster than through writing.
Best of luck
