Hello Thomas, I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your cria. We have a cria that is 6 months old and is unsteady when she walks. She was treated for several diseases - none of the treatments helped. A few weeks ago, a vet took xrays of her neck and found that one of the vertebra had not formed properly and was out of line. The misalignment pinched her spinal cord and causes the unsteadiness. He thinks that it will eventually paralyze her.
If you find nothing wrong with your crias leg or hip, you might have some xrays taken of the neck to see if you have the same problem.
Good luck

Hi! Friday we took Maud to a different Vet. Her leg was x-rayed. This vet seemed very competent. He gave her an IV-drop with glucose. After minutes her muscles started moving, and she was moore alert. When we got back home I started trying to help her stand. It worked and she started nibbling some grass. Saturday I started early helping her stand, after an hour she walks and eats on her own, but she's week. Had to help her up again this morning, also gave painreleaver. She's walking on shaky rear legs eating hay, she went for mom's milk, didn't get any. Is it normal to be this week? remember she's been lying down for almost a week. |

I would say yes, absolutely, it would be normal to be weak after being off your feet for so long. Remember how you feel after a few days in bed with the flu? That first day or two that you're back on your feet, you're a bit wobbly too, but it wears off as the muscles get their strength back by moving around.

Hi,
Its normal for her to be weak. What was the diagnosis on the leg? Are you still supplementing her with milk? I'd keep an eye on her weight. If she's down a lot she may not eat well.

Hi Thomas,
I am so happy to see you had your cria x-rayed...and yes, it would be normal for her to be unsteady. She needs good food, so please continue with the bottles of milk, she needs good nutrition to get her back in shape.... If you are adding soaked grain pellets or fibergest to her milk, I would start with a couple of tablespoons..with a cup of milk, making it as smooth as possible and let her drink that from the bottle (you will need a nipple with a larger hole in it)...Still keep in mind that she will need at least 10% of her body weight for maintenance, 15% for good growth...The fact that she is eating a little hay and grass is wonderful, but it is not enough to help her recuperate and grow.....
Keep up the good work and let us know how she is doing,

Hi Thomas,
It sounds like your cria has a Vitamin E or Selenium deficiency. I see that you have started some vitamins. If you have already given a dose of Selenium you will not need to give another for a month. We continued to give Vitamin E every other day for about 2 months. We worked with the vets at Colorado State University. We bought Vitamin E tablets, which are a gel pill. Every other day we drew the contents of one gel pill out into a syringe (without a needle) and then injected that into the mouth of the cria. Our little guy had went completely down in his back legs and could not walk. After approximately three days of treatment he could at least stand and drag his back legs. Those were hard days to watch. Fortunately, when he was the worst off, both he and his dam cooperated with us so that we could help. Needless to say, he is now over a year old and looks awesome! I will pull our treatment notes for you and some photos.

Hi! I'm happy to report our cria is now well I think the vet saved her life by simply giving her the glucose in the blood. That's what gave her apetite back. Also she is getting milk from mom now.
Her leginjury must have caused her not to eat. Our bottles gave diareeha. A better foodsupplement would be great to have at hand, should this happen again.
Thanks for all the help.
