Vitamin C is a water soluable vitamin so there shouldn't be any worry about overdosing. In fact I have heard of huge doses being used to help treat snake bite (google Pat Coleby +snake bite + vitamin c). Vitamin C helps (amongst other things) to assimilate iron.
I use Ester C oral powder with my alpacas, as it is easier on their stomachs than the regular Vit. C. According to my vet's prescription, I dose at 1000 mg. 2x daily (to spread out the dose)for an adult that is unwell. I dissolve it in a little water in a 60cc syringe with the feeding tip, and then add a little yoghurt. That is the treatment dose, by the way.
Our injectable product's active ingredient is Ascorbic acid as Sodium Ascorbate 500mg/mL. Recommended dose is 1ml for a cria (500mg), 4ml for adult (ie. 2000mg. So I guess a maintenance dose would be somewhere below this.
For a cria (weight 9kg) with an acute sepsis a naturopathic vet gave much higher dosage rate. I must admit I didn't go as high as I was instructed but she said 5ml injection morning and night . Note - the injectable product does sting so I do prefer the oral route if possible.
