Hi guys,,
Problem on the farm. Well actually on a farm we sold a pregnant dam to, cria born,,couple challenges/maiden/milk/seems to be resolved. But the cria has a back right leg that appears to have lateral movement in the hock, and he rests his foot on his pastern, not his pads,,,If he were a dog I think the diagnosis would be spinal injury,,not sure,,any ideas? Thanks

If he is knuckling under, (walking on the top of his foot) that does suggest neurological problems, but not necessarily in the spine. Can he bend the hock? If it is (or had been and is now back in place) dislocated, nerve damage may have occurred at the joint. If he is properly placing the foot but is "down on his pastern" in that leg, it may be loose ligaments. This cria needs to be evaluated by a vet to accurately determine the issue. Good luck with the little guy.

The farm's vet very nicely watched a video supplied by the owner, said the extending of the leg showed there was no neurological damage and recommended the following:

"In the video where he runs you will notice he extends the right hind leg normally so there is no neurologic deficit that causes him to stand with it flexed when at rest. It is strictly a muscle strength issue. I would suggest Bo-Se x 0.5cc and Vitamin ADE x 0.5cc. This and a little more time will is all he will need."

Hats off to the remote Doc!

It's good to hear you know what is wrong with the little fellow and can be treated. Soon he'll be good to go!!
