I know that talking about the weather is a cliche, but this year and last have really pointed out how important it is to our well being. We are in an extreme drought area this year and drove over quite a bit of the US "corn belt" earlier this summer. It was scary and I really hope we will all be willing to work together to make sure our animals are taken care of throughout the winter. We also need to make sure our friends, neighbors, and families are taken care of. We have finally gotten some rain after 78 days, but it has been 1/4 inch one day and 1/10 inch today. We are praying that these rain showers will continue and eventually grow. The cracks in the ground here are at least 2 inches across and dry dirt goes to the rocks in many places. Not only is the alpaca business in a precarious position, but so is our food supply and our nation. We had a train wreck yesterday when several grain cars fell into the river, al be it low, but the first thing I thought was, why did it have to be grain? It was then pointed out to me that it could have been oil or something toxic which would have been so much worse, but I hope you get my point. Hope all of our Alpaca Friends are safe during this bad storm, especially those in the path of Sandy on the east coast. We are expecting strong winds in S. W. Ohio, but my alpacas are safely tucked into the barn, three of my younger GSDs are safe in their kennels in the garage, and the two oldest are keeping watch with me in the house, along with the cats and kittens. For some reason, the Guineas and their 16 youngsters are roosting on the dog kennel fencing instead of their snug house, where their food and water is as well. Maybe they know something that I and the weather folks don't know.
