Set the ambiance, mood seemed to be right, an experience female with an inexperienced 4 year old male. Haltered them both and brought them into their own pen- and thats where all failed. She wouldn't cush, and actually seemed to be more upset being out of the female pen. He wasnt very assertive, but wanted to try until she kicked him away. We tried halter breeding 2x with this female and 2x with an unproven female with similar results. I really thought this was going to be easy like dogs or horses. What am I doing wrong and is there an easier way??

Maybe she just wasn't in the right cycle. I would wait and just keep trying her.

Ok, but should I keep trying the halter method? Any other suggestion?

Do you have an experienced male? You could pull a bait and switch and let the experienced guy get the girl down and then pull him off and let the young guy take over at that point.

as Christiane said maybe she wasn't quite ready. She could have also realized the male was inexperienced and was annoyed.

His reaction could have been that since she told him "not today" he backed off.

I would put them together every other day, maybe even using the bait and switch method. I have never done that but hear that people have.

You could also if you have another pair that you want to breed put them together and then put these two in a pen next to them.

Those are great suggestions. I only have 3 unproven young males, so the switcheroo method wont be feezable this year. I really wanted them to breed this month and no later or wait for spring so we are more likely to be home for the big day. Since I work full time, would it be wrong to leave the two together in a pen? What would happen? And how would you know they are breed if you didnt see them?

The "bait and switch" method can work, but depending on where you live,(if you live in cold weather territory) I would wait until spring to breed them. He may just need a bit more time as well. I no longer breed anything(accidents do happen) later than July because I don't want fall/winter babies anymore. The spring, early summer babies seem to do much better. In additon, I like going to fall shows and having to be on baby watch then, kind of puts a crimp on that.

We had a male that just would not "get the hint" so an experienced breeder arranged to have us come by when he was breeding another set and have us the pen next door. That was the trick our male got the hint as soon as he heard and saw what was happening.

Good Luck

Thanks all. We decided to wait for spring. Funny thing, after we decided this, the male got really excited and started to ride another male around the pen and started orgaling and the females i tried to breed came running over! I shouted over to the girls, "Really, girls? Really!", lol
