This seems like a silly question, but I was wondering if a maiden will know to spit off the male, after a possible successful insemination.

I bred my maiden for the first time 4 weeks ago. She was good and cushed for the stud after a bit of walking away.

The following weeks I found her cushed next to the males at the fence along with the other open females. My boy was so excited he was orgling and sadly, trying to mate the dirt occasionally!

Two weeks later, I put her in with the same stud and she was receptive again. I allowed them to breed again.

I'm wondering if she is pregnant, will she just ~know~ to spit the male off? I don't think she's been around another spit test to see it with others.

Has anyone had a maiden that just kept breeding over and over? I wouldn't want to damage her or lose a pregnancy if she actually is pregnant.

I will have the vet out to do an ultrasound at 30 days, but in the meantime, my window of fall breeding opportunity is closing.

If she readily sits, she's likely open. 3 strikes and she's out, and can start again when spring arrives.
If she is not spitting off, I would not waste money on an ultrasound.

Maidens do not necessarily know how to react the first time they are pregnant - some spit, some don't, some run, some kick, some just refuse to cush - and some submissive maidens may cush even if pregnant. However, in your case, since she is soliciting breedings (not just sitting when a male is brought to her), I would assume she is not getting pregnant and have a reproductive workup done on her. She may still have an intact hymen or she may not be producing mature follicles yet or probably a bunch of other things I'm not thinking of - but that a reproductive vet would.

I just went through this with a maiden who was bred in June..confirmed pregnant via rectal ultrasound at 30 days.. spit off..then decided she was interested in the boys again..cushed next to breedings..and then cushed directly for the male..did progesterone for my own piece of mind as maidens can be confused..she is not pregnant...will try again in the Spring! Good luck! Frustrating- isn't it!!

I've found that if you watch their behavior before their bred, assuming that they want to be bred, their behavior after their bred and pregnant, changes dramatically.

Just my experience thus far.

thanks

The progesterone test would be my choice. If it shows she's pregnant then you haven't laid out too much $$ You can still confirm with an ultrasound to be certain.
I have one female that I don't even have to test. I just have to look in her eyes and watch her strutting around and posturing to the herd. I still do a progesterone on her anyway

Roxanne, that's true for most, but alas, not all. I know my animals very well, and I still found my maiden very hard to read - she seemed pretty darn uncertain herself , but the US was definitive.

Depends on the vet. I can get almost 2 ultrasounds for the cost of a single progesterone test.

Re the maiden -- do you have any experienced dams you need to do spit checks on? I found my one maiden "got it" after being in the same pen as an experience dam during a spit test.

Cheers,
Dani

Thank you all for the input!

Here the vet charges $30 for an ultrasound, and about $90 for a blood test.

She's still cushing at the fence with the open females She gets more active though and attempts to mount one of my maidens. Alpacas never cease to amuse me!

I forgot to mention that she is over 2 years old. I think we will give her a third shot soon. Then it will be waiting till next spring.

I have a dam who might be pregnant, who I could use for a spitting spit test to show her. This dam is the only one NOT cushing at the fence now! She was bred the same day as my maidens first breeding attempt.

Update:::::::::

I put her in with the stud male again and she ran and and spit and kicked him good! I guess she does know what to do! Good girl

I have found most maidens to be quite goofy for their first breeding and subsequent spit tests. They have all seen a breeding in action (they usually stick their heads through and sniff whats going on). they have definitely been spit at preggo gals and have seen the same preggos spit at males. But, when it's their turn for spit testing, they seem to wander around like their heads are in the clouds! They eventually get crankier as their pregnancy progresses and will actively spit at a male later.
As a side note, watch out for retained CL's. I just had the vet out today to do and ultrasound on a VERY predictable girl, who has been spitting off males (of all species I might add.....humans and cats) who was due Sept 13th. No baby. When I brought a couple of males back to the male pasture, she deliberately walked along with us, spitting at each male the whole way! So, we did a progesterone test on her, and are waiting for the results. We are pretty sure it's a retained CL. She is always friendly when open, so her body thinks it's still preggo for some reason!
