Help! Today I went out to breed my two yr. old maiden. I had selected the male I wanted to use to improve her the crimp in her cria. I put them in the breeding pen, nothing. No spitting no nothing. To make a long store short I tried four boys with her and none were interested. They would smell her butt and walk off. She had no interest in any of them either. What's up with this? Could she already be? If so why no spitting? I'm not new to breeding my alps but this is a 1st for me. Thanks, Carol Stone Field Alpacas

Maybe she doesn't have a ripe follicle? We had the same problem with our maiden. We kept introducing every 3 days and finally their decided it was time. I understand maidens can be difficult sometimes. Good Luck

Sounds to me like she's not ovulating yet or isn't at the right part of her cycle if she is ovulating. Has she been flirting? Have you been teasing her with a male? Two years old is still too young for some.
I would keep introducing a male to her periodically, let her see any other breedings you may have to do, and wait for her to show signs of wanting to be bred before really trying to breed her. They may be subtle signs - like approaching a breeding or a male with ears up instead of back - but I think you'll pick up on when she's starting to be interested. Your males' behavior will also help - when she starts ovulating and/or has a ripe follicle, they should know, and show interest.

Funny I just read this post, and have just come up from the barn where a visiting stud was here to have a date with my 2 1/2 year old maiden. She is a petite gal, but finally hit her stride and is now as big as her mother (who is Bolivian and petite.)
This maiden will flirt with any boy she is near. Tail up, head up, strutting her stuff. Each time I tested/teased her with my two studs she would approach them and stand there, but never dropped. With the visiting stud she went a little wild, bucking and running away from him (he is a bit pushy) but then would stand and let him mount and just air spit. We will try them again in 2 days and then again this weekend. Maidens give me more gray hairs *sigh*
I'm hoping with this intense teasing she may get the picture as she didn't seem stressed by the encounter. In fact, I put her back in after about 5 minutes and she was so relentless at the gate that I brought her out to him again! I had one maiden that would stand and squeak, we "helped" her down by bending her front knees and she took on the first try. This year she was better but squeaked and squealed throughout the breeding (yes, I made sure he was in the right area too.) Silly girls.
Good luck. I do think it is what others suggested, just an off day in their receptivity cycle. Good luck with your gal, I'll keep plugging away with mine.
