I have to say, I'm very sorry about this. It is good to know it was not a person. I almost replied the first day, but did not as you seemed convinced it was person. To me it sounded like a big cat, but not knowing PA, I did not know if that was a possibility.
In Colorado the wildlife department will put a trap on your property to catch and dispose of problem bears. You should check into that. My sister lost a 2 year old llama this year to a bear and they did trap it.
My father has also had good luck using electric fencing against bears. You may want to invest in some temporary fencing until the bear is trapped.
Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. |

Ralp, I have been following this incident with baited breath. Glas also it was a four legged predator, I would hate to think it was humans. Take care of yoruself through this stressful time. Is there any way the local animal control or DEC could trap the bear near your location and dispose of it. I would hate to think of you trying to take him out all by yourself and the resulting risk it would put you in.

Ralph and family, I know that it doesn't make the loss any less, but am relieved that it was not a person. My first thought when I read your first post was that it might be a large cat. Last summer we had 10 chickens go missing without a trace -- not so much as a pile of feathers. We decided that it must have been some sort of cat. The dogs must have been working the other pasture. Please be very careful. I assume that you have notified the authorities. So sorry for your troubles. Take care.

So very sorry for your losses. The fact that it was an animal and not human really doesn't make it any easier to handle. I hope you can get some help taking care of the bear. I also sincerely hope that the coming holiday season brings you peace that you so richly deserve.

Mr. & Mrs. Ralph, We are so very sorry to hear of your loss and the horror involved. I'll be praying that the deranged soul that did this will find healing through the Lord. Also praying for you and yours to be able to come to peace with this. It's good that you persisted with the law. Do you have cult activity in your area? The law would know and should be able to know where to look for signs.
I was thinking that since I can not put in a fence or gate up to keep humans out, that a sign at my entrance stating "visitors by appointment only" might help for those that have any integrity or intelligence.
Again we are sorry for your loss, Terry & Sue

That is sooo sick. What could that person have been thinking?? That poor momma alpaca too. Oh, that is just wrong. Amen to what hoodwinked said. We should pray that this person comes to the Lord.

I'm so glad to hear at least that you don't have some hoodlums of sickos lurking. And I hope you get that bear however you can.
Yesterday my husband went to get his hunting license and was chatting with the town clerk about her goats. She told him that the goats suddenly didn't want to go into the barn at night and instead would huddle at their back porch.
After a week or so they set up a webcam in the barn door looking outwards and within a night or two they saw a very big black bear approach. They couldn't believe their eyes. The goats were in the barn in their pen but apparently the bear was only after grain. They found its tracks inside, but nowhere outside.
I had to go to townhall just to see to see the picture on her laptop for myself. She said other people nearby caught a bobcat on a webcam recently too.
This is about 1-1.5 miles from our farm as the crow flies. Many nights lately our three LGDs have barked and paced ferociously and relentlessly. We have new neighbors and at least twice the coyotes have been very close in the last week so I assumed those were the problems setting them off. Now I'm not so sure.
My condolenses on your losses. I hope you can resolve it soon and get back to peaceful nights.

I am so sorry for your losses. I know it must be little consolation to know it was a bear rather than a human, but I will echo at least it wasn't a willful act. I hope that bear doesn't return.

WOW Ralph - I can only echo the sentiments of others. Please be extremely careful!
Its a relief to know it was a bear and not a wacko but I don't understand how the dam got out of the barn with the door still closed.
Do you have any motion detector lights that might help deter incoming predators?

Since this incident turned out to be a bear you should make sure that the State Police know that you shot at it and it may be wounded and find out if there is a local Game Warden and inform him too!
They might want to make sure that anyone in the area with dogs or livestock or horses are also aware that there is a bear running around that is not afraid of going near residences and will enter barn area's looking for easy prey.

Hi,
If you have not already I'd call the PA game commission. I think the number for the office nearest you is (570) 675-1143. I know they will help with problem bears. We see bears in our area every once in a while and they are smart and they come back although maybe you frightened him or her away.
Take care and so sorry for your losses!

Ann is absolutely correct about contacting the PA Game Commission. I looked at their website because, as the crow flies, we're not very far from you. I found the following:
Subchapter D. Payment of Bear Damage Claims
Sec. 551. Authority for payment. (a) General rule. - Except as limited by subsection (b), the commission may pay for any damage done to livestock or poultry or damage done to bees or bee?keeping equipment by bears upon lands open to public hunting and lands within safety zones if the damages are reported to an office of the commission within ten days of the damage and the claims are presented in a sworn written statement. (b) Beehives and equipment. - No claim for damage to bees or their hives or bee?keeping equipment shall be paid if any of the following factors occurred: (1) The bear is killed. (2) The affected hives are located more than 300 yards from the domicile of the owner or from the domicile of his employee or other agent in charge thereof. (3) The claim is a second or subsequent claim filed by the claimant and the claimant has not erected, maintained and operated a commission?approved and furnished bear deterrent fence around the hives. (c) Restriction on claimants. - All payments for bear damages shall be restricted to persons domiciled in this Commonwealth.
You can see in paragraph (a) that any claim must be filed within 10 days. Good luck

That is so scary! We had a bear cut the corner in the horse pasture last year. The horses went beserk! I would bet the mother was so panic stricken she jumped out of the barn through that dutch door. Poor thing. I am so sorry for your loss but grateful it was not human predators! I would consider getting a LGD or two. They can't beat a bear, but their barking and desire to protect their flock would certainly deter one. We have two Pyrs in with our girls and won't ever let them be without one. Our boys have a guard llama, but we know he would be no match for a bear. I pray the bears stay in the woods! Again, so sorry for your loss!

Ralph,
Could you please give us an update on the bear? Has it been captured/killed yet? I'm so sorry for your loss, such a sad story. Hopefully, there will be a good outcome soon and all your herd will be safe again.
