When selecting breeding stock, we kept two points in mind:
(1) Our alpacas must be calm and friendly.
(2) The fiber must be interesting, suitable for spinning, & a delight to work with.

Enchanted Hill Stella

Pattern, 30515932, 3/8 Chilean, 5/8 Peruvian

Cara has been one of our most dependable dams and this year she certainly played her trump card. This was her fourth cria, the fourth female, it is our first female appaloosa cria, and she was born on Joanie's birthday. What a deal!

Stella was born looking like a month-old alpaca. She had none of those bowed legs or weak pasterns. Within 10 minutes of birth, she was up and nursing, and then it was time for play.

Stella has beautiful fiber. As an appaloosa, Stella is unusual, but even more unusual is the fact that her spots are only one shade darker than the background color. Typically, appaloosas have much darker spots. So, Stella has a wonderful, heathery look with her speckled/freckled appearance.

Stella has just produced her second cria, sired by Bo.

  Queen B Bodacious
    Pattern, 30471894, Full Peruvian

Bo is the superlative herdsire we've been waiting on, with all our requirements wrapped into one--great conformation, super fiber, laid-back personality, and an outstanding pedigree. Add to that his wonderful appaloosa spots found scattered from head to toe, and we've got a winner. Oh!!!! If he were just ready to breed! But he's worth the wait.

Summer '09 update: The ultrasound confirms we have six Bo crias on the way, due in the spring of 2010.

Bo's dam, Calliope, is from the best-known U.S. herd for producing premier appaloosas--Dewey Meadows. And Calliope just may very well be the best they've ever had. It was a smart move when Becca Black, Queen B Alpacas, purchased Calliope, a first step in creating Bo. Check out Calliope's photos to see the quintessential huacaya, dressed in appaloosa spots.

The next step in the creation of Bo was the selection of his sire, the world-renown Accoyo, Ppperuvian El Moustachio.

Enchanted Hill Boo-ella Sold!

Boo-ella is the result of a repeat breeding of Stella and Bo. The first resulted in a gorgeous appaloosa male. This time, we were hoping for an appoloosa female. Well, we got the female. AND, she's gorgeous. She weighed 99 pounds at 9 months of age, so should be ready to breed in the fall of 2014.

Boo-ella appears to have really nice, soft, crimpy fiber, and it is that light fawn that is just so pleasing to the eye. A sweater made from her fiber should be just right for those crisp fall days, and it will match just about anything.

Boo-ella is also offered in a package with Lavender, Chiquita, and George of only $3000. What a nice way to start a new herd!
