Penny is an alpaca who can take care of herself. When she was little, it worked for us to have our males and females together. The alpacas get excited when they get pellets, and sometimes the bigger ones nudge the smaller ones out of the way. Since Penny was the only non-adult, we thought about feeding her separately. We soon found out that we didnt have to worry about whether Penny would get her share. She thought nothing of pushing the big males out of her way.
We have watched 3 alpaca moms give birth, but Penny has given birth to two crias without us. We look out at the herd and notice a new little one following Penny around and nursing. Penny is a capable, confident mother. She is also good at growing lots of fleece.
