Well, my favorite, and oldest, black alpaca, presented me with a lovely true black female(just what I ordered) today. As usual, she did all the work herself and I actually missed the birth because I was busy cleaning out the water tanks. When I looked into the pasture, and saw a placenta, I knew there had to be a cria somewhere, so went looking. The little brat was already running through the pasture and was nearly dry when I caught her to administer the iodine to her umbilical cord. I had checked mom about two hours prior, and nothing was indicating am impending birth. Today was day 351 for her, so she delivered right on time. Cria is nursing and mom is happy, as is her owner. That was the last cria of the year, so now I can sort of relax. Time to run to the store to get some wine. Cria looks like the spitting image of her dam, and I just found out that the sire, a rose grey, has thrown several black crias.

Congrats, it is wonderful when everything goes perfectly and normally without intervention or worry. I try to steer new clients towards "tried and true" proven girls too. They are irreplaceable and their value is really underestimated sometimes.

Birthing season finished, enjoy the wine!
