If you purchase an animal that is registered and named after his/her farm, for example Chestnut Hill's Black Beauty, can you rename it so that your herd ends up named after your farm, for example My Farm's Black Beauty? Or do you have to start your naming convention once new crias arrive?

Cliff,
You are not supposed to give your own farm name to the cria unless you arranged for that particular breeding and own the dam at the time of conception. You cannot change an exsisting name, as far as I know.

Actually, you CAN change existing names but not to add your own farm identifier in place of the initial breeder's. It's expensive though and most people don't bother unless they're really troubled by the name (I've been offered alpacas that I wouldn't consider adding to my herd just because their name was so . . . raunchy, in fact).

Is it just me, or is anyone else dying to know the name of Judith's not-accepted alpacas?

I'm not sure, but I think the owner of the dam at time of conception has to approve the cria's name. We have 2 alpacas with our farm name that we didn't breed - one we got at mom's side (cria was a BEW), and one was in utero from an oops breeding. Both owners at the time of conception didn't want their farm's name listed, and told us we could use our own if we wanted to (and we did).

I think it is $100 to change a name, if there are no offspring.

LOL Claudia, it was actually just one, and he was offered to me for free because he was so aggressive (probably trying to live up to his name). I don't know how they even registered him with that name, but they did. I think he's since been gelded; hopefully he's also been renamed. :-)
