I need some opinions on what looks like choanal atresia. We had a female cria born yesterday, full term at 15 lbs. The dam just could not push this baby out so I went in after it. The vaginal canal was narrow, I think because mom is fat. Anyway, she was pushing this cria's face against the vaginal opening for an hour at least and most likely against the cervical ring before that. Things were so tight that I had to use a bit of force to manipulate the head to get it out ( with two front legs). After more help, the cria was born. The dam has quite a bit of bruising along the vaginal wall and the cria has bruising inside her mouth (inside the lips). And there was meconium in the amniotic fluid.
That being said, the cria only breaths through her mouth and sounds a bit...growly and snorty (not gurgly). I did check her by holding her mouth shut and she panicked with no air going in the nose. To make matters worse, mom has no milk at all. I thawed the cow colostrum from the freezer. The cria guzzles what I give her but she doesn't breath when drinking. At first she would drink until she passed out from lack of oxygen. Now she guzzles and gasps and guzzles some more. I realize that aspiration pneumonia is in her near future.
So here's my confusion. This little girl is very energetic. She is difficult to catch. Even when she seems to pass out...she will suddenly gasp for air then jump up and ram into me looking for more of the bottle. She has one speed...fast. I thought CA crias were lethargic and sickly.
Could this possibly be birth trauma to her nose/face? I am giving her Banamine to reduce swelling, just in case.

It's been a few days, any improvement?

Sorry, no advice to give, other than consult your vet.

No. We put her down when the seizures started due to lack of oxygen when taking the bottle. I also tubed her nose just to confirm. I hit a wall with both nostrils.

sorry to hear this. You did the right thing for the cria even though it was hard.
